CHAPTER SEVEN

A BUZZING NOISE woke Michelle from her slumber. For once her sleep hadn’t been full of terrors, and she hadn’t even dreamed. She lifted her head a little, listening to the noise. On the other bed Jacob’s pager was lit up, just visible clipped to his white coat. It wasn’t the emergency tone, but it made her very aware of her surroundings all the same.

A stirring came from the side of her, and she turned to see Jacob lying on his back, naked, one arm underneath her back, pulling her close, the other holding her hand tight. She made a move to leave him, but in sleep he tightened his grip, mumbling to himself and making it harder for her to pull away.

She’d slept with a colleague. In the same on-call room where she had headbutted him and broken his nose just a short time ago. They were nearing the halfway mark in their race for the job, and now things were more complicated than ever.

What the hell are you doing?

Rebecca was somewhere laughing at her, no doubt. It gave her a pang to think of her friend. Had he whispered the same things to her? Used the same moves? But it didn’t feel as if it was just lust, and he’d said all the right things. Could a man be a player one day and a relationship man the next?

She gently peeled herself away from him, dressing quickly and quietly. She needed to get up, get out of there, go home.

What if Andrew found out? Would they both lose their jobs before they’d even had a chance to prove themselves to the investors?

He moved, and she turned in panic. He was still asleep, smiling at something. She grabbed her things and then knelt by the bed, watching his long dark lashes flutter against his skin.

What’s in that handsome head of yours, Jacob? Can I really trust you? Do you really know how messed up I am? Do you know how messed up you are?

She stroked the thick dark hair back from his forehead, exposing a tiny scar in his hairline that she hadn’t seen before. She bent down, running her lips along it like a whisper in the dark.

She knew it shouldn’t work. He was her rival, a player who had slept with a friend she still mourned, but she just couldn’t leave him alone. She was starting to think about him all the time, wondering how he was, how his day was going, what his home looked like.

A knock came at the door, and she flinched.

‘Dr Peterson?’

Shit. The page must be urgent after all.

She checked, but Jacob was still asleep. The pager went off again, but it was unnoticed by him. The man was exhausted.

She smiled a little, feeling a dirty kind of satisfaction that she might be the cause.

We have a lot to talk about, she thought to herself. But maybe we just need to go for it.

She stood, checking her hair quickly in the mirror. She looked as if she had just been thoroughly seen to—which wouldn’t do at all.
